Environmental Plans

Environmental plans are crucial for industrial facilities managing hazardous materials and stormwater runoff to maintain compliance. From Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) to Hazardous Waste Contingency Plans (HWCP), Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans, and Slug Control Plans (SCP), understanding EPA and state requirements helps protect your business and the environment. Regular inspections, employee training, and timely plan updates are essential to stay compliant and avoid penalties. At BCA, we specialize in guiding industrial clients through the complex landscape of environmental regulations, ensuring your facility is prepared, compliant, and operating safely.

SWPPP – Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan

Facilities with an Industrial Stormwater Permit must develop a SWPPP. This plan includes quarterly inspections, annual employee training, regular sampling and reporting, and a technical review every five years. Staying proactive in inspections and training ensures effective stormwater management and regulatory adherence.

HWCP – Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan

Large Quantity Generators (LQGs) that produce more than 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste each month must create and maintain an HWCP. This plan involves weekly inspections, employee training for both new hires and ongoing staff, and submitting reports to local emergency agencies like police, fire, and hospitals. Keep the plan current by updating it whenever waste types, characteristics, or site emergency procedures change. Many states also require biennial or annual hazardous waste report submissions

SPCC – Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan

Facilities storing over 1,320 gallons of oil in containers of 55 gallons or more must prepare an SPCC plan. Conduct monthly and annual inspections, train employees regularly, and perform integrity testing of aboveground storage tanks if necessary. Every five years, a technical review certified by a professional engineer ensures your plan remains effective.

SCP – Slug Control Plan

Facilities with an Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permit need an SCP. Confirm whether your plan requires inspections or training, and stay aware that renewal timelines vary—some plans need updates every two years, others every five. Revise your plan whenever your process changes or circumstances evolve.

Key Reminders

  • Keep spill kits stocked and easily accessible.
  • Train employees on spill response procedures.
  • Update your Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) regularly.
  • Ensure staff can access your environmental plans at any time.
